IVF treatment typically involves the following stages;

Step 1: Stimulation

The first step in IVF involves injecting fertility hormones so you produce multiple eggs each month instead of only one.Normally, a woman produces one egg per month.Medicines called fertility drugs are given to the woman to boost egg production.

Step 2 : Monitoring Progress

The clinic will monitor your progress throughout the drug treatment through vaginal ultrasound scans and possibly, blood tests.Before retrieval procedure, you will be given medication injections to help your eggs mature. This is likely to be Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG).Timing is very important.If the eggs are taken out too early or too late, they won’t develop normally.

Step 3: Egg Retrieval

A minor surgical procedure in which a doctor obtains eggs from the follicles of the ovaries.Using ultrasound images, inserts a thin needle through the vagina and into the ovary.The needle – which is connected to a suction device – sucks the eggs out. This process is repeated for each ovary.There may be some cramping after the procedure, but it will go away within a day.

Step 4: Fertilization

The eggs that have been collected are placed together with male sperm and kept in a environmentally controlled chamber.The sperm most often enters an egg a few hours after mixing of the sperm and egg.If the chance of fertilization seems low, the sperm may be directly injected into the egg. This is called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

Step 5: Formation of Embryo

When the fertilized egg divides, it becomes an embryo. Specialists regularly check the embryo to make sure it is growing properly. A normal embryo has several cells that are actively dividing.The procedure is done about 3 to 4 days after fertilization.

Step 6: Embryo Transfer

The doctor inserts a thin tube containing the embryos into the woman’s vagina, through the cervix, and up into the womb after 3 to 5 days of egg retrieval and fertilization.Sometimes more than one embryo is placed,which can result of twins, triplets, or more.It is important that the doctor discuss with couple about number of embryo should be transferred. If an embryo implants in the lining of the womb and grows, pregnancy occurs.Remaining good quality embryos may be frozen or donated for future.
